Paid Teaching Internships: three-week internships this summer
Undergraduate and master’s students interested in teaching shortage subjects, including maths, can now apply for fully-funded, paid Teaching Internships taking place this summer.
27/05/2026
The three-week internships, running from 22 June to 10 July, are available in key shortage subjects including maths. They're available for university students with an interest in teaching who are either in their second, third or final year of an undergraduate degree, or studying towards a master’s degree.
Delivered by teaching internship providers across England in partnership with the Department for Education (DfE), the programme gives prospective teachers the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of school life and explore teaching as a potential career.
Dozens of providers are offering placements nationally, with opportunities available across a range of regions and schools. While some providers have already filled their places and closed applications for this year, many are still accepting applications for this summer.
During the internship, participants can expect to:
- observe lessons and explore different approaches to teaching and learning
- work alongside experienced teachers and subject specialists
- support pupils and take part in classroom activities
- jointly plan and teach parts of lessons
- gain practical experience of teaching in a school setting.
Participants who complete the programme will be paid £455 per week. Once you've finished your internship, you can decide if you want to train to teach in England and get qualified teacher status (QTS).
'I observed lessons, provided 1:1 support to pupils, and even taught classes! The internship was particularly beneficial in providing a unique insight into teacher training and the application process.'
Carly, former teaching intern
Internships aim to provide an early experience of teaching and help participants decide whether a future career in the profession is right for them.
Places are limited and applications are time-sensitive, so prospective applicants are encouraged to check availability with providers in their area and apply as soon as possible.
